Here in the East Riding of Yorkshire, we want to try and be well placed to ensure effective and appropriate support is in place for vulnerable adults and their carers, across East Riding as the country emerges from the lockdown period.

Adult social care has already taken steps to expand its offer to carers, with the launch of the hidden carers training and the Carers UK digital platform in March. The development of additional support for befriending and short breaks, in conjunction with the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise is also underway.

The East Riding Carers Support Service have been working with the East Riding Adult Social Care Your Life Your Way transformation programme to ensure that there is a greater understanding of the issues faced by unpaid carers, and recognising carers as experts by experience in the delivery of care to their cared-for. The teams have been keen to increase opportunities to identify those hidden carers in the East Riding who many not be aware of the support available to them, especially given the context of the pandemic and the potential isolation that this may have brought about.

In addition to this, and to mark Carers Week this year, we launched our Employers for Carers membership resources to all our employees and continue to work together to try and support our colleagues who are juggling work and care. We have continued to communicate with our staff and residents through newsletters, press releases, social media, podcasts and via virtual drop-in sessions. We’ve formed a sub group of staff from the Your Life Your Way Programme, the Carers Support Service, the Live Well Work Well (workforce wellbeing) team and Organisational Development and we propose to develop the Council’s employee carers offer through the following:

Engagement with employees – we propose initiating a ‘call to action’ to our employees who are carers/managers of employee carers to help us develop our approaches, so they are relevant and supportive. We propose to do this through running a campaign to seek involvement in surveys, focus groups, and events as appropriate. Engagement with our employees will help us identify what support they would value most, test out our thinking and generate new ideas.

The development of a policy/guidelines/charter specific to employees who are also carers. This will set out our intentions so that we can apply a consistent and inclusive approach to how managers support employees who are carers and encourage best practice across the organisation.

The establishment of a carers network.

Promotion of regular information and support available for employee carers – this will be via the Employers for Carers resources and the Digital Resource for Carers as well as through Live Well Work Well HR, the intranet and the Carers support service.

Bespoke training for employees and managers to recognise carers, to have appropriate and supportive conversations about caring and signpost correctly

Our newly formed Equalities, Diversity and Inclusion group is a forum which provides an engagement space to develop initiatives, challenge thinking and test progress on the delivery of actions. We are facilitating an equality, diversity and inclusion online staff event, which Katherine Wilson, Head of Employers for Carers, will also be attending. The event will be held virtually and will cover topics relevant to our employees who are also carers, inviting questions and debate from our staff. The Covid-19 pandemic has shone a spotlight on caring in all its forms – including the growing number of workers who are caring for older, disabled or ill family members or friends and we want to be a part of achieving the Council’s Vision of an East Riding where Everyone Matters.

Emily Randall, Development and Implementation Lead, East Riding of Yorkshire Council – 08/11/2021 As a result of the emerging pressures following the pandemic, the risk of carer breakdown has risen dramatically with the potential for a surge in system-wide demand. There is recognition of the crucial role of unpaid carers in the health and social care […]

[26,1

post-3097","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog","category-uncategorized
["GET
